White Hart Lane boss to offer St James’ Park man a lucrative contract.
Tottenham are readying a move to snap up Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton on a free transfer as Harry Redknapp prepares to make significant moves before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month. The White Hart Lane boss is eager to strengthen his midfield and has elected to move for the Magpies star over continuing his interest in West Ham’s Scott Parker.
The 28 year old St James’ Park man had angered the club’s board to the extent that they are willing to allow the former Man City man to leave for nothing and Redknapp is just one of many manager’s said to be keen on bringing in the England hopeful.
Thus far Tottenham have had a sedate transfer window, bringing in two teenagers (Cristian Ceballos and Souleymane Coulibaly) and Aston Villa keeper Brad Friedel and chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear that players must be offloaded from North London club’s expansive squad before moves to bring in reinforcements can progress.
The departure of Robbie Keane to LA Galaxy has helped relax the purse strings a little and Redknapp will look to make Barton a tempting over to move to Tottenham and the fact that the cost of purchasing the player for nothing will leave the club able to offer a lucrative contract.
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew will be loathed to lose Barton, especially having lost the likes of Kevin Nolan and Jose Enrique during the transfer window. The midfielder was one of the club’s top performers last term and has been in good form in the first two fixtures of the season.
Harry Redknapp will still be looking to offload a few more players this month with the likes of Peter Crouch, Wilson Palacios, Niko Krancjar and Giovani dos Santos strongly linked with moves away from the club. Tottenham will however attempt to keep Luka Modric from completing a move to rivals Chelsea.
