Arsene Wenger strengthens Emirates Stadium defence.
Skysports.com understands Per Mertesacker has passed a medical and agreed personal terms with Arsenal.
The giant Werder Bremen centre-back is in London ahead of what is reportedly a £10million transfer on a three-year contract.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger turned his attention to Mertesacker, who has entered the final year of his contract in Germany, after deciding Bolton’s Gary Cahill was too expensive.

Having seen his defence ripped to shreds by Man United and noted that his centre back options were severely limited, Arsene Wenger has wisely opted to bring in the hugely experienced centre back Per Mertesacker. The 26 year old German international may well be the ideal partner for reliable Belgian international Thomas Vermaelen.
With 75 German international caps to his name, 6ft 6in Mertesacker arrives in the Premier League with a lot of know how and Wenger will hope that his arrival will signal a big improvement in his defence after seeing his side concede their highest Premier League total last term in over a decade.
The likes of Sebastien Squillaci, Laurent Koscielny and Johan Djourou have all failed to consistently perform and this left Wenger with no choice other than to invest in reinforcements and Gunners supporters will surely be happy that the Arsenal boss opted for an established performer rather than his usual policy of drafting in youngsters or those who are not exactly household names.
