Stamford Bridge made one last effort to get White Hart Lane star.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp revealed his club rejected a last minute bid of £40million for midfielder Luka Modric from Chelsea.
The Blues tabled the offer on Monday after Spurs had already turned down previous deals of £22million, £27million and £30million.
The 25-year-old had pleaded with Redknapp and chairman Daniel Levy to allow him to switch across London, but they refused him everytime.
The Croatia international is understood to still be hopeful a move will happen in the future, even if he has to wait another 12 months.
With Tottenham turning down the big-money offer, Chelsea were forced to turn to their back-up option of Liverpool’s Raul Meireles.
The 28-year-old had worked under Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas at FC Porto, and now the pair will be reunited in an £11million deal.
But Spurs fans will be happy the club managed to keep hold of its biggest star and managed to bring in Scott Parker from West Ham United on a busy deadline day.
“The chairman stood firm,” Redknapp said. “I think £40million was apparently offered.
“It is a big offer to turn down, that’s for sure.”
