Emirates Stadium teenager set for prolonged period on the sidelines.
Arsenal fear they could be without Jack Wilshere for at least three months.
The 19-year-old midfield star has failed to start a competitive game this season because of a persistent problem with his right ankle.
He is currently wearing a surgical boot – and it will stay on for another month as the club attempt to manage the injury conservatively.
It comes as a massive blow to under-fire Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and also Fabio Capello, who will be without him for the remaining Euro 2012 qualifiers.
Arsenal’s medical team are hoping that when he starts a light training programme in mid-October, the rest will have sorted the problem.

This news will further worry a club who have seen Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri sold and seemingly having less quality and strength in depth in the centre of their midfield.
Wilshere was arguably one of the few bright spots of last season and Wenger would have hoped to have the talented youngster to call upon as he looks to push the North London side back up the table after an awful start to the season.
The 19 year old notched 49 appearances last term and has become a crucial player who links midfield to attack with enthusiasm and a great deal of footballing ability and intelligent distribution.
