Mario Gotze on his way to Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal used Tuesday night’s Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund to run the rule over wonderkid Mario Gotze.
Gotze, 19, is the emerging star of German football and his performances for the Bundesliga club have caught the attention of Arsene Wenger and his scouting network.
German reports suggesting the Gunners had a £35million bid rejected by Dortmund were dismissed by the north London club.
But Sportsmail understands Arsenal did make an initial enquiry over the availability of Gotze in the closing days of the summer transfer window.
Ahead of last night’s clash, Wenger said: “He is a provider, he is the one who has the best assists in Germany and is the most dangerous player.
“He comes in from the right side and links in well with the strikers.
“He is the player we have to keep quiet.”
Dortmund chiefs insist Gotze will remain in the Bundesliga for the remainder of this season and the whole of next while also claiming that when he does leave it will be for a ‘bigger’ club than Arsenal.
But that will not stop Wenger in his chase for one of Europe’s most coveted young talents.

1. Arsenal play Borussia Dortmund.
2. Arsene Wenger says some nice things about a Borussia Dortmund player.
3. Arsenal will sign a Borussia Dortmund player.
Perhaps we’re just being cynical.
Mario Gotze is certainly one of the brightest young talents in football, but if German tabloid Bild‘s story that Arsenal had a £35m offer rejected in the summer, it is difficult to imagine the club raising their offer beyond such a margin.
At present, it appears more likely that Arsenal will move for Sochaux playmaker Marvin Martin.
