Young Belgian to start Carling Cup encounter.
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has stated that some Chelsea’s younger players will start on Wednesday night, including a full debut for Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku. Josh McEachran, Oriol Romeu and Ryan Bertrand are also all expected to make their first starts of the season.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Lukaku stated his intention to shine in his first full outing following on from a impressive 20 minute display against Norwich and an appearance at Old Trafford on Sunday.
‘It’s an opportunity that allows us young players or players that are working hard but not playing at the moment to show to the manager that he can count on us to be an additional plus to the squad and I hope tomorrow that I will get my chance,’ Lukaku said.
‘I have thought about goals obviously, but I don’t put any pressure on myself, I just want to keep working hard and doing my tasks as a striker, and the goals will come after that.
‘I am working hard in training and feeling much better week after week, which is important, and I feel like I have already made progression since I came here and am getting along with the English lads, the French-speaking guys and the Spanish guys. It’s important to me because these guys are very experienced and if you get along you can only improve.’
Lukaku is expected to line up on the tip of Villas-Boas’ new 4-2-3-1 formation, infront of Salomon Kalou, Josh McEachran and Florent Malouda with John Obi Mikel and Romeu in the holding positions. Paulo Ferriera, Alex, David Luiz and Ryan Bertrand is the most likely backline. None of the team that started against Manchester United are expected to play, given the depth and young talent that Chelsea has needs playing time sooner rather than later this season.
