Arsenal defender Sebastien Squillaci has returned to training after recovering from a calf injury.
The 31-year-old is back with the squad despite the club trying to sell him over the summer, barely 12 months since he moved to north London from Sevilla.
The France international was expected to add quality and experience following his £3million transfer but has become a symbol of the Gunners frailties in defence.
Several high-profile mistakes – twice clashing heads with Laurent Koscielny and being sent off against Huddersfield Town – have made Squillaci into a figure of ridicule – even among his own supporters.
French minnows Evian were strongly linked, but they baulked at his wages, thought to be around £50,000.
Some clubs wanted to take him on-loan but the Gunners refusing to pay half as part of any deal, so he was forced to stay in North London as the window closed.
The arrival of Per Mertesacker plus the emergence of youngsters Ignasi Miquel and Kyle Bartley, plus continued speculation over Gary Cahill and Jan Vertonghen mean Squillaci’s days are still numbered.
