England skipper knows what it is like to have a dodgy family.
England captain John Terry knows the shame of having a family member arrested and has backed striker Wayne Rooney to put aside his recent troubles.
The 25-year-old’s dad, also named Wayne, was bailed pending further inquiries tonight after being arrested over an alleged football betting scam.
As well as Wayne senior, eight other people, including his uncle Richie and Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings were also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud.
Merseyside Police said the arrests were the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission into “suspicious betting activity”.
Terry, whose mother and father have both been arrested, is confident the Manchester United forward will concentrate fully on the Montenegro match.
“Wayne is focused on the game tomorrow,” Terry said. “We all realise the importance of that.
“It’s important for him to go out there and play his football, which he loves doing. He’ll always be fully focused on the pitch.”
“When you’re on the pitch and the training pitch you can switch off from anything in life. Tomorrow’s game is the most important thing, we all appreciate that.”
