Emirates Stadium boss keen to land experienced midfielder.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger faces a battle with AC Milan for Fiorentina contract rebel Riccardo Montolivo.
Montolivo is off contract in June, but could be sold by the Viola in January with Milan showing keen interest.
The midfielder is also under consideration by Wenger and might have been ready to reignite his interest in January given his side’s poor start to the season – and Jack Wilshere’s long-term ankle injury.
But now reports in Italy have revealed that Serie A champions Milan are readying a £2.5m January bid for the 26-year-old.
Some sources state that Arsenal lead the chase for Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo as the Italian international is reportedly keen on a new challenge abroad and a move away from the Viola seems on the cards given that the player appears to be running down his contract after seven years at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Fiorentina have had two poor seasons that have seen a side who regularly qualifies for the Champions League finish ninth and eleventh and this has led to Montolivo wanting to move on and Arsene Wenger is keen to add more experience to his midfield as well as some added bite and verve and the deep lying playmaker offers both.
Having lost Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas in the summer Wenger brought in Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun on loan but it seems fair to say that these replacements are not of the same calibre as the outgoing stars whereas the 26 year old former Atalanta man can certainly add more quality to a squad that is struggling for form.
Arsenal will be more than happy to match, and perhaps even top, the £2.5m offer that AC Milan are set to make as it is far safer to bag the player in January than to wait until the end of the season to capture the box to box midfielder.
