But deep into extra-time, Zidane took exception to an off-the-ball comment from Italy’s Marco Materazzi and opted to respond with a fierce headbutt to the chest.
What was said? Zidane (reacting to some mild shirt-pulling): “If you want my shirt, I’ll give you it later.” Materazzi: “I’d prefer your whore of a sister.”
The Frenchman was giving his marching orders and one of the game’s greatest ever players left the field for the last time in disgrace.
