Arsenal look set to sign Macclesfield Town defender Elliott Hewitt from under the noses of Everton.

The 17-year-old has already represented Wales at Under-21 level and has also been attracting interest from Chelsea, according to the Daily Mail.

Arsenal are the latest club to join the race for the starlet, who made his debut for the Silkman against Hereford United last season and is available for around £1.5million.

The Gunner’s injury crisis at full-back, with Carl Jenkinson and Bacary Sagna both out injury, could give Arsene Wenger reason to invest in some cover in the position.

Hewitt is being pushed towards north London by his closest advisers, with Arsenal’s philosophy of giving youth a chance.

“If there is a better right-back in the bottom two divisions as we speak I haven’t seen one,” manager Gary Simpson said.

“He’s absolutely unbelievable to say he’s only just 17. Whether we can hang onto him I very much doubt. All the big boys are hovering.”
