Inter Milan will reportedly move for Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic, should Cristian Chivu join Liverpool.
According to talkSPORT, the Reds are interested in taking Chivu to Merseyside and, should that happen, Claudio Ranieri will target Vidic as a replacement.
United, though, have no intention of selling Vidic and the 30-year-old is perfectly happy with life at Old Trafford despite young centre-backs Phil Jones and Chris Smalling rising to prominence in recent months.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are said to be monitoring Chivu’s situation as his contract with the Nerazzurri nears its expiration.
The 31-year-old Romanian will be free to leave the San Siro at the end of the season, should he not agree a new deal, and Liverpool are alleged to be ready to pounce.

Liverpool’s interest in Cristian Chivu makes a great deal of sense as the Merseyside club have been guilty of some sub standard defending this season and Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is keen to bring in experienced reinforcements as he looks to secure a place back in the top four.
Romanian international Chivu is something of a controversial character and the 31 year old has been involved in some infamous incidents during his eight and a bit seasons in Italy, first with Roma and then for the past four years with Inter Milan.
The adaptable defender may well be interested in a new challenge at this stage of his career and his no nonsense physical approach to the game may work a treat in the Premier League and with Jamie Carragher making a few mistakes and with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel spending time out injured recently, Chivu may just be the ticket and wouldn’t cost a great deal in January.
Meanwhile Inter Milan’s interest in Vidic is sure to be turned down flat and given that the Nerazzurri have struggled for form this season it seems highly unlikely the Sebian international would consider a move to join the club.
Inter Milan are currently in 17th spot in Serie A having incredible lost five of their opening nine matches of the season.
