Emirates Stadium close in on MLS star.
United States winger Brek Shea will be offered a contract to stay with Arsenal in January and according to sources he may well be the only signing that Arsenal make during the transfer window.
The 21 year old is currently under contract with MLS side FC Dallas but is spending his off-season with Arsene Wenger’s side to train and retain his fitness.
Arsenal though have not only been impressed with his skills on the training grounds but have also had the player monitored whilst on international duty and feel he is a player that could add to the squad greatly. There has been interested reported to be from Italy for the winger however with Shea currently training with the Emirates side, it puts Arsenal in a good position to be able to land him in January.
With just a little under two months to go until the January transfer window opens Arsenal will be keen to get the deal signed and sealed as soon as possible and will require FC Dallas to give the side their blessing. Although figures for the youngster are sketchy it is believed that the MLS side would look at at least £5m to part with the international.
There are many who will state fairly vehemently that Arsene Wenger needs to spend big in January to help push Arsenal back into the top four, seemingly the very least the North London side is expected to secure this season, but others who know all to well that the Gunners boss is not known for signing players during the winter transfer window.
Brek Shea is a player who is known for over confidence and his amusing hair styles but is also considered one of the hottest young American prospects and the FC Dallas man has been linked with a move to Europe with many sides reportedly scouting the big attacker.
The 21 year old Texan is an adaptable attacker who appears to be most suited to a wide role and despite his height, 6ft 3in, is very good on the deck and is able to beat his man and has an eye for goal, notching up 11 goals this term as he helped his side to the MLS post season.
Whilst Arsenal have a number of wide options, including Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott, Ryo Miyaichi and Gervinho to name just four, Shea is clearly one that Wenger may be looking at in the long term. Clearly such a signing doesn’t harm their brand recognition in the States either, though that would hopefully not be one of the main reasons for the £5m outlay.
