Emirates Stadium boss targets Lyon battler.
Arsene Wenger is eyeing up a move to sign Lyon midfielder Maxime Gonalons as he looks to add more grit to his first team squad.
The 22 year old has been a virtual ever present this season at the Stade Gerland and has forced his way into the senior French national team set-up as a result and former Gunners defender Remi Garde, who is currently Lyon boss, will be loathed to lose the powerfully built midfielder.
Arsenal are reportedly looking at bringing in new additions to help bring more steel to their midfield. Alex Song and Emmanuel Frimpong are the two players within the North London club’s armoury who provide Wenger with bite in the tackle but whilst the Cameroon international has improved a great deal over the past 18 months, whereas the Ghana born teenager is perhaps still a little raw to be considered a regular first team option.
Gonalons has a terrific engine and a determined attitude but is also comfortable on the ball and is a player that Wenger reportedly showed interest in the past but is now ready to make an offer to bring the Lyon man to the Emirates Stadium.
The success of a January bid for Gonalons may be assisted by the progress of Garde’s side this term, currently Lyon sit in fourth spot, some seven points off big spenders PSG who lead Ligue 1.
