Old Trafford boss keen on Bernabeu midfielder.
Man United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. The Scot is on the lookout for a defensive midfielder to add more steel to his side and has earmarked a move for the German international who has shared duties with Frenchman Lassana Diarra this term.
Khedira arrived at the Bernabeu in July 2010 and had a mixed first season at the club and has had a fairly up and down campaign this term but is still seemingly Jose Mourinho’s first choice battler but has opted for Diarra on a number of occasions.
This season Diarra has started eight Real Madrid matches whereas Khedira has been in Mourinho’s starting eleven on ten occasions.
In recent weeks the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan and Man City have been linked with the midfield enforcer and now Man United boss Ferguson is said to be lining up a potential £20m bid for the 24 year old. Man United do not possess an out and out defensive midfielder, with the likes of Anderson, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley being more rounded players who perform more varied roles.
Ferguson signed Owen Hargreaves to fill that hole but the England international spent vast periods of time out injured during his four year spell at the club and has now been released. Sami Khedira could well be the ideal man to step into the role but it may be tough to persuade Real Madrid to listen to offers from a Champions League rival.
Real Madrid have of course regularly snapped up Man United players with the likes of David Beckham, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo all making such a move in recent seasons, perhaps Ferguson is hoping for a role reversal as he looks to lure Khedira to Old Trafford.
