Anfield side target experienced defensive midfielder.
Liverpool are ready to make a £6m January bid for Fiorentina midfielder Riccardo Montolivo as they look to bring added steel to the Anfield midfield. A move to sign the Italian international has become more urgent following the injury suffered by Brazilian Lucas in last night’s Carling Cup encounter with Chelsea.
26 year old Montolivo has stalled on signing a new deal to stay in Florence and will be out of contract in the summer and the Serie A side may opt to accept offers in January over losing the talented midfielder for nothing next summer.
Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli had previously earmarked a move for the former Atalanta man and the need to bring in midfield support has increased due to the injury suffered by Lucas Leiva, who has been in excellent form thus far this season. The 24 year old defensive midfielder could be out for as long as six months after he suffered a knee injury at Stamford Bridge during the club’s 2-0 win over Chelsea.
Though Kenny Dalglish have a number of central midfield options he doesn’t have many effective out and out defensive options and will reportedly therefore look to make an offer for Montolivo who is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League after six and a half seasons at the Artemi Franchi Stadium.
The likelihood of Montolivo leaving Fiorentina is significantly increased by the fact that the club has struggled this season and currently sit 16th spot in Serie A after a poor start to the campaign which led to the sacking of Siniša Mihajlovi? who has since been replaced by Delio Rossi.
