Old Trafford manager ready to swing the axe.
Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly ready to accept offers for as many as half a dozen of his Man United first team as he looks to offload under-performing members of his Old Trafford squad.
The Scot was said to have been incensed by his second strings performance at home to Crystal Palace and the Carling Cup Quarter Final had in fact served as a test of those players he felt were on the verge of being considered as surplus to requirements and many players are said to have well and truly failed that test.
The Man United boss has a fairly large playing squad, with 32 at the club and another seven out on loan and now Ferguson is ready to trim the numbers ahead of possible new signings in the summer. Sir Alex is thought to have reached the point that he will now seriously consider offers for six of those he feels have not shown themselves to be good enough.
Ferguson spent over £50m to bring in David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones over the summer and also saw the likes of Edwin van der Sar and Paul Scholes call time on their footballing careers whilst deciding to not offer Owen Hargreaves a new deal. Experienced pair Wes Brown and John O’Shea left for Sunderland and Gabriel Obertan has reignited his career at Newcastle United.
However Sir Alex Ferguson is now keen to further reduce his squad as he looks to bring in further young talent as he looks to build a squad for the long term. The likes of Mario Gotze, Jack Rodwell, Ross Barkley and Neven Subotic have all been heavily linked with moves to the Premier League champions and money will be made available for new additions as the club looks to keep pace with big spending rivals Man City.
Here are the six players set for the chop.
