Old Trafford side closing in on deal to sign Reebok Stadium defender.
Manchester United are closing in on a deal for Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.
Cahill, off contract in June, has been linked with Tottenham and Chelsea, while Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger failed with a bid for him in August.
It’s understood United have been working away behind-the-scenes to land Cahill and could cough up a fee in January for his immediate signing rather than wait to take him on a Bosman in the summer.
Nemanja Vidic’s season-ending injury has brought forward United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans for Cahill, who has convinced the Scot to go for him thanks to his accomplished performances for England.
A number of factors appear to be in play here. With Nemanja Vidic out for the rest of the season and talk of Rio Ferdinand perhaps leaving in the summer and with Phil Jones seemingly working even better as a defensive midfielder than he does in the back four will leave Sir Alex Ferguson looking to strengthen his defence and a move for soon to be out of contract Bolton man Gary Cahill makes a great deal of sense.
Though in recent weeks Man United have shored things up at the back in the Premier League, they leaked goals aplenty in the Champions League and the addition of the 26 year old England international may well be a very wise one to make.
The former Aston Villa man had a great season last term and though there is reported interest from a number of London clubs a short move to Old Trafford appears to be the one that is likely to tempt the Sheffield born defender.
