Anfield side show interest in Bernabeu midfielder.
Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli has earmarked a summer move for Real Madrid midfielder Sergio Canales. The young midfielder is currently on loan at Valencia where he has attracted a great deal of praise as the Spanish under 21 international attempts to re-ignite a career that was stuttering on the Bernabeu bench.
Comolli has scouted the former Racing Santander man this season and will reportedly make inquiries about the talented attacking midfielder’s availability. Jose Mourinho may consider offers for the youngster as his first team chances are limited at the Real Madrid.
Sergio Canales has started just six games for the La Liga giants following his £4m move from Santander in the summer of 2010 but his good form at Valencia has kept him on the fringes of Vincente del Bosque’s Euro 2012 squad but he still awaits his first senior cap.
Liverpool have adopted a policy of signing younger players as they look to build for the future, in 2011 they have brought in the likes of Andy Carroll, Sebastian Coates and Jordan Henderson and Kenny Dalglish has been willing to offer the club’s academy graduates a taste of first team football. Youngsters like Jay Spearing, Martin Kelly, Jack Robinson and John Flanagan have impressed when called upon.
The Merseyside club’s owners are seemingly more than willing to fund further additions to Dalglish’s squad and it would take a bid in the region of £10m to help lure Canales from Real Madrid.
Canales is an adaptable midfielder who can play in an advanced central role, in the hole behind the strikers but perhaps most effectively out wide and it’s that adaptability that apparently attracts Comolli who will hope that a move to the Premier League may tempt the Spaniard into making the move.
Valencia are believed to have an option to retain Canales on another season long loan deal next term with a further option to sign the player outright but Liverpool are said to be monitoring the situation and will look to wrestle the 20 year old away from the Mestalla.
