Anfield side target Bundesliga attacker.
Liverpool are ready to enter the race to sign Koln attacker Lukas Podolski. The German international has become a target of a number of clubs following an explosive first half of the season from the 26 year old, during which time he has struck 14 goals in 16 Bundesliga appearances.
Anfield boss Kenny Dalglish is said to be very keen on adding to his striking options following a lack of goals thus far this season and the added issue of a likely long term ban for top-scorer Luis Suarez will further the need for the Merseyside to spend this month to keep up their push for a top four finish.
Arsenal are heavily linked with interest in Podolski and Arsene Wenger’s need may be lessened by the great form shown by Robin Van Persie but the Emirates Stadium boss will see two of his strikers, Marouane Chamakah and Gervinho, leave for the African Nations Cup in January.
Liverpool have netted just 24 goals in 19 Premier League matches and big money signing Andy Carroll, though still offering a great deal up front, is not scoring with regularity. Veterans Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt have helped out when needed but are clearly not long term options.
£15m rated Podolski is a hugely experienced campaigner who has seen a return to form since returning to his former club following three average seasons at Bayern Munich. The Polish born attacker can work effectively out wide as well as up front in an orthodox striking role and may well be tempted by a move away from the Bundesliga.
No doubt other sides will be chasing Podolski, who has perhaps saved his best form for national team action. The two time World Cup third place finisher has amassed 95 caps and scored at a very healthy rate, netting 43 times.
