Arsene Wenger keen to bring Nou Camp man to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly ready to make a move to sign Barcelona veteran Eric Abidal this month and is said to be ready to make a €5m (£4.1m) offer for the French international who will be out of contract at the end of the season.
Pep Guardiola will be loathed to lose the experienced defender, who this term has been a virtual ever present effectively filling in at the centre-back for Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, who have both spent spells out injured. However contract talks between the Catalan club and Abidal have been ongoing for months and have apparently stalled leaving many sources to believe that the 32 year old may leave the Nou Camp this month.
Abidal has spent four and a half years at Barcelona, notching up over 170 appearances and winning an array of silverware in the process. The Lyon born defender has impressed many with the speed of his recovery following the removal of a liver tumour last March returning towards the end of the campaign and started the Champions League Final triumph over Man United at Wembley.
Arsenal have suffered with a serious injury crisis this term, most significantly affecting the Gunners defence. Full-backs Bacary Sagna, Kieran Gibbs, Andre Santos, Carl Jenkinson and make-shift replacement Frances Coquelin are all out and this has led to talk of Arsene Wenger looking to bring in a short-term solution, or indeed a loan signing, to help cope with these problems.
Though Eric Abidal is something of a cult hero at Barcelona the defender will still be open to offers from other clubs if he feels that his contractual demands are not met by Guardiola, though the Barcelona boss may be open to offers in preference to losing the player for nothing in the summer.
The likes of Man City and PSG have also been linked with moves for the consistent defender and may indeed be in a position to offer Abidal a more lucrative contract though the former Monaco, Lyon and Lille man may be interested in playing under Wenger at the Emirates Stadium.
