Old Trafford boss continues search for creative midfielder.
Manchester United are reportedly considering a January move for French international Yoann Gourcuff as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to add creativity to his midfield. The Old Trafford boss has been tracking a number of possible playmaker signings since the summer, his most notable target being Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder, and now the Scot is monitoring the Lyon star ahead of a possible bid this month.
Arsenal have been tracking 25 year old Gourcuff for some time but have failed to lure the former Lyon man to the Emirates Stadium and now Ferguson is looking to beat Arsene Wenger to the punch as he looks to beef up his midfield. The Man United boss was already on the look out for a playmaker and his need to bring in such a player have increased due to the loss of Darren Fletcher and Tom Cleverley to long term injuries.
Though veteran Paul Scholes was brought back into the squad from retirement Ferguson is looking for a longer term solution and may feel that Gourcuff would be a more cost effective solution than Sneijder. The Dutch international is said to have wage demands in excess of £200k a week and San Siro boss Claudio Ranieri is adamant that his Serie A side will not sell the former Ajax and Real Madrid man any time soon.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is looking to fight off interest in Gourcuff and Stade Gerland boss Remi Garde will similarly struggle to replace as talented a player as the former AC Milan man but they could struggle to prevent the talented midfielder for pushing for an exit if Man United do indeed follow up their interest with a bid.
Gourcuff first burst onto the scene whilst Rennes, where the then teenager turned in mature performances that attracted interest from AC Milan which resulted in a high profile move to Italy. Things didn’t go according to plan at the Serie A giants and two seasons struggling with form an injuries he was loaned out to Bordeaux where he helped Laurent Blanc’s side to a domestic title and helped to kick-start the Brittany born attacking midfielder’s career back into life.
Admittedly Gourcuff has had an up and down season thus far this season but his raw talent and obvious ability is said to attract Sir Alex Ferguson who has scouted the Lyon man who may feel that a new challenge and a move to the Premier League could help once again re-ignite his career.
