Emirates Stadium playmaker subject of intense speculation.
Lazio have moved to clarify speculation suggesting they would be interested in signing Andrei Arshavin from Arsenal.
The Italian club have been linked heavily with a move for the Russian playmaker in a host of yesterday’s newspapers, but Lazio sporting director Igil Tare has cooled such talk – despite readily admitting his admiration for Arshavin’s talents.
“Arshavin is a great player and I think everyone would like to have him in their squad,” Tare said to calcionews24.com.
“But I don’t think there is any chance of seeing him in a Lazio shirt.
“There are a number of reasons why it would be difficult.
First of all, we have never spoken with Arsenal and secondly, perhaps more importantly, I don’t think the Gunners would want to part with a top player.”
Perhaps Arsenal are willing to let Arshavin go though, and despite Arsene Wenger regularly defending the diminutive Russian in public, there remains a suspicion that he is losing patience with a perceived lack of effort on the pitch.
At his best, Arshavin can be devastatingly effective.
He is a highly creative player with a deft touch and turn, who possesses a powerful shot.
When Arshavin delivers on his ability in attack, he can be excused from his defensive duties.
However, at the moment, he offers little in either department – and it is that which may see Wenger let him leave Emirates Stadium.
