Anfield side chase Etihad Stadium midfielder.
Reds poised for sensational midfield swoop
Liverpool are set to make a move for Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong, according to Crunch Sports.
The news comes following reports that Dutchman recently turned down an improved £100k-a-week deal from the Premier League title contenders.
De Jong has fallen behind Yaya Toure and Gareth Barry in the pecking order at City and has made just four league appearances this season.

So how likely is this? Well it has been widely reported that Nigel de Jong has turned down a £100k a week deal to stay with the Premier League leaders and presumably he has done this not because he doesn’t think it’s enough money but because the Dutch international has ambition and doesn’t want to waste away on the Etihad Stadium bench and certainly not before a summer Euro 2012 jaunt.
De Jong has a reputation for being a tough tackler and perhaps does on occasion go ‘over the top’, just ask Xabi Alonso and Hatem Ben Arfa, however the 27 year old is hugely experienced, a World Cup runner-up and a player who can definitely add steel to the Liverpool midfield.
Whilst Lucas Leiva is indeed a defensive midfielder, the Brazilian has evolved into more than just a battler and has matured into a top notch box to box performer who should in many ways be thought of as more than just an ‘enforcer’. So in theory any move for De Jong wouldn’t be at his expense.
Also given that Lucas is out for the rest of the season Dalglish may feel the need to bring in reinforcements this month as the Merseyside club looks to push for a top four finish.
