Manchester United are contemplating an exciting move for Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen, according to reports in the Netherlands.

The Danish wonderkid’s agent Martin Schoots was recently asked about the speculation, but was keeping his cards very close to his chest.

“I can say nothing about [Manchester United's interest],” said Schoots.

“There is always great interest in Christian and with the market now open, the interest is now enormous.

“Eriksen has been followed by many teams for several years, but we don’t want to discuss speculation.

“Christian should focus on football.”

The Ajax star is thought to be one of the most promising young talents in the game at present, and at the age of 19 has already established himself as a regular in the Dutch champions’ team, winning last season’s Eredivisie along with a host of individual awards.

He was also the youngest player to be selected in any team at the 2010 World Cup, and participated in two matches for an underwhelming Danish team.

Now though, as the youngest debutant for Denmark since the great Michael Laudrup, a nation’s hopes rest on Eriksen.

It is clear that he will not fulfil his potential at Ajax, and will surely one day move to one of the biggest three leagues in the world.

The trouble for Manchester United is that Eriksen has shown most interest in joining Barcelona, though admittedly there is little need for him in their stellar squad.

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson is well aware of the need to spruce up his midfield, and brought Paul Scholes in on a short term deal to plug the gap.

Scholes will have to be replaced one day though, and perhaps Eriksen will be the man Ferguson looks to.
