Former Anfield hero to make Merseyside return?
Rumours around Merseyside are rife that Javier Mascherano is in Liverpool holding talks with officials regarding a sensational £15m return to Anfield.
Liverpool are looking to boost their midfield in the second half of the season after the inspirational Lucas was ruled out for a year with a cruciate ligament injury.
Mascherano left Liverpool for Barcelona in 2010 for a monster £22m fee but his career hasn’t really gone the way he had hoped, this is despite winning the Champions League last season where he played as at centre-back in the final against Manchester United.
He is known as a ball-winning centre-midfielder by trade but has not really been given a chance in that position due to the form of Sergio Busquests.
That has been the main problem for the Argentinian-international, and he is keen to get back playing regular first-team football again before his career comes to a close.
Could this really happen? Javier Mascherano was worshiped by Liverpool fans during his three seasons at Anfield and even though his decision to move to Barcelona was a bitter pill to swallow it would appear that most supporters understood it was a dream move for the Argentine that he simply could not turn down.
Pep Guardiola used the battling midfielder sparingly last term and though the 27 year old collected a La Liga and Champions League triumphs, the win over Man United was then dedicated to the Liverpool fans he still had feelings towards, Mascherano was pretty much a bit part player and used to cover injured personnel in various positions.
This season however the former West Ham man has been a virtual reguarl, once again filling in with great success in the centre of defence but at the same time struggling to prove himself worthy of a defensive midfield role that is seemingly reserved for Sergio Busquets.
Even with this being the case, would the Barcelona man be looking to return to Liverpool? Clearly things are brighter at Anfield under Kenny Dalglish than they were in the last year of Rafa Benitez’s reign and during the nightmare of Messrs Hick & Gillett and the embattled Roy Hodgson era, but a move back to the Premier League would still be a big shock.
Liverpool could well do with added steel in their midfield, not least because Lucas Leiva is out injured for the rest of the season. Indeed the Brazilian has evolved into a more rounded player so in theory could be played in a midfield tandem with Mascherano.
Do Liverpool fans think such a move could occur?
