St James’ Park push to seal Vicarage Road defender deal.
Newcastle are hopeful of signing Watford defender Adrian Mariappa after he turned down the opportunity to speak to Wigan.
The Latics were thought to be in pole position to sign the 25-year-old after making a higher bid than the Magpies.
Wigan’s bid was accepted by the Hornets and they were given permission to talk to the defender but Sky Sports sources understand he has turned down the opportunity to speak to the Latics.
Instead, it is his intention to join Newcastle and the ball has now ended up back in Watford’s court.

Alan Pardew is confident of landing Adrian Mariappa and is keen to bring in the 25 year old defender before the transfer window closes this evening. The Magpies have made clear their interest and Watford boss Sean Dyche now faces a battle to keep the Hornets academy graduate from pushing for a Vicarage Road exit.
Mariappa has served Watford well, notching up over 200 appearances for the club but the temptation of a move to the Magpies will surely prove too much for the Championship side to prevent.
Pardew is keen to beef up his defensive options having seen his side struggle when he has lost the likes of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor to injury during portions of the current campaign. The fact that Newcastle United have performed so well this term, holding on to their top six spot, has helped them to persuade owner Mike Ashley to dig deep into his pockets this month.
Newcastle United spent £10m to bring in Senegal international Papiss Cisse and Pardew will hope he won’t be the only January addition.
