Emirates Stadium boss targets St James’ Park marksman.
Arsene Wenger has reportedly placed Newcastle United striker Demba Ba at the top of his summer wish-list as he looks to beef up his Arsenal attack. The Senegal international has been in excellent form this season but there has been growing speculation that the 26 year old has a transfer release clause, said to be triggered if a prospective suitor makes a £10m bid, and this has led to a growing interest in the former West Ham man.
Arsenal have been heavily dependent on captain Robin Van Persie for goals, with the Dutchman netting 22 of the North London club’s 46 Premier League goals thus far this season. The likes of Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh have failed to make an impact and this has led to talk of Wenger targeting a new striker signing.
Wenger is said to have been monitoring Ba for some time and is hoping to lure the Newcastle United striker to the Emirates Stadium and the Gunners chances of luring the Mapgies star to Arsenal would be greatly boosted by a top four finish and the resultant Champions League football for next term.
With Van Persie having less than 18 months to run on his current contract Wenger may feel that the signing of a top goal-scorer like Demba Ba could help convince the Arsenal striker to put pen to a paper on a new deal.
Since moving to St James’ Park on a free this summer Demba Ba has been in consistent form, netting 16 goals in 18 starts and the French born forward was also very effective at West Ham but was unable to prevent the East London side from being relegated. However the drop to the Championship meant that the striker was available on a free transfer as the talented forward had included a release clause meaning he could leave Upton Park on a free transfer.
