FC Schalke 04 ace set for Emirates Stadium?
Arsenal are reportedly considering an interesting swoop for FC Schalke 04 forward Jefferson Farfan on a free transfer in the summer.
The Peru international is out of contract in the summer, and the club are struggling to agree terms with what they consider his agent’s unrealistic demands.
According to a report in German newspaper Der Westen, Farfan demanded an astonishing €14m (around £11.6m) signing on fee to stay in Germany, which led Schalke to withdraw their latest contract offer in January.
“We could not fulfil the demands of his agent,” said Huub Stevens, manager of the Gelsenkirchen team.
“I still hope that we can reach an agreement, though.”
It was believed that Schalke were ready to listen to offers for Farfan in January at around the €7m (approximately £5.8m), but it would seem that they have elected to wait until the summer to sign him for nothing.
Juventus and Inter Milan are thought to be the two clubs rivalling Arsenal for the 27 year-old Farfan’s signature, but it is believed that the Gunners’ style of football and the superior quality of the Premier League could push the odds in their favour.
Arsenal currently rely heavily on their star striker and captain Robin van Persie for goals, with backup options Marouane Chamakh and Park Chu Young providing little support.
Whilst it is difficult to see Arsenal stumping up €14m in a signing on fee, Farfan could be a useful player for Arsene Wenger.
Capable of playing across the front three, he could also cover for either winger if required.
