Not good news for the Emirates Stadium side.
Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has reportedly told Spanish newspaper MARCA that he would be “excited” by a move to Real Madrid.
Van Persie, 28, is out of contract in the summer of 2013 and, although Arsenal plan to hold talks over an extension before the end of the season, talk has been gathering pace that Barcelona and Madrid plan to make a move.
“I am happy to hear of the interest of a club as important as Real Madrid,” Van Persie is quoted as telling MARCA. “Of course I would be excited to play there.”
If these quotes are to believed, and they come from the Marca so therefore this should be taken with a big fistful of salt, then Arsene Wenger and indeed Arsenal Football Club as a whole may well have reason to worry that Dutch international Robin Van Persie will not sign a new contract in the summer and therefore found himself with a year left on his deal, leaving the North London club under pressure to cash in on their captain.
Jose Mourinho has been strongly linked with a move for the Arsenal striker and as such comments of this type will only encourage a summer bid.
If the Gunners fail to secure a top four finish then the chances of such a move occurring will increase dramatically.
