Emirates Stadium defender’s interview skewed by the media.
Thomas Vermaelen admits he’s unhappy play left-back for Arsenal.
Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have been favoured in the heart of the back four and Vermaelen admits that is where he would prefer to be playing.
“I am fed up playing at left-back,” the 26-year-old Belgian is quoted as saying by The People .
“I don’t think I am good there – I want to achieve my highest level and I can’t do that on the left.
“I play there to help the team but it gives me no satisfaction as I can’t reach my best standard.
“I do my job but seldom feel content after matches. If the team wins I am happy, but it remains frustrating.”
This was the way the story was initially marketed by the footballing media but a closer look at the full transcript of the interview given by Thomas Vermaelen to the Belgian press, supplied by the always excellent Arseblog, can be found by CLICKING HERE.
It appears on closer inspection all that the former Ajax man has said is that playing a left back is not his preferred position but clearly the Arsenal man is more than happy to ‘muck-in’ given the horrific injury crisis the North London club has experienced, that has left them without most of their full back options for pretty much the entire season.
Perhaps the key sentence in the transcript sums up the situation perfectly.
“I think that is unfortunate but there is nothing that I can change about that.”
Luckily for the Gunners, Vermaelen is pretty handy at full back and appears more able to fill the role than any other makeshift option available to Arsene Wenger.
