The Champions League returns this week with four fascinating last 16 ties getting underway on Tuesday and Wednesday. It seems like an age since the last round of European fixtures and many are looking forward to the elite club competition getting underway again.

There are two matches on Tuesday and two on Wednesday, each and every one of which is difficult to call. There are of course favourites, but it has been an unpredictable Champions League this season.

The first of the two Tuesday evening matches sees Bayer Leverkusen host Barcelona. This is a tough test for the reigning Champions as they travel to face a Leverkusen side that will be aiming to make the most of home advantage.

Barcelona have been more fragile than usual on the road this season too, so the German club – who sit 6th in the Bundesliga – may well fancy their chances of an upset in this one, and the price of 8/1 certainly looks value for punters.

Also getting underway at 7.45pm on Tuesday evening is Lyon at home to Apoel Nicosia who are representing Cyprus in this year’s Champions League.

This is one that the French side are favourites to win, but Apoel picked up valuable draws against Zenit St Petersburg and FC Porto in the group stages and will back themselves to get a positive result.

Speaking of Zenit St Petersburg, they are in action at 5pm on Wednesday evening in their first-leg tie against Benfica. Much like every home team at this stage, Zenit will be determined to get a victory in front of their home fans to take to Portugal in the second-leg.

In the final game of this week’s Champions League fixtures, AC Milan host Arsenal. This is a really tough one to call. Milan will no doubt be favourites – they have an excellent history in this competition – but Arsenal are a dangerous side.

Milan have dropped points domestically of late too, so their confidence won’t be as high as it was a few weeks ago. Arsenal on the other hand have won their last two games – including a 7-1 hammering of Blackburn Rovers – and will be relishing this tough task and the price of 11/4 looks just about big enough to back.

The game at the San Siro is certainly an excellent way to round off the return of the Champions League this week.
