You have to hand it to the former Wolves boss, he is big enough to know it was probably the right time to leave Molineux and he has no animosity to the club for swinging the axe following the 5-1 drubbing at home to West Brom. Good to see a manager ready to hold his hands up but also leaving a club in a dignified manner and certainly better off for his five and half years at the club.

For the record Mick McCarthy won 104 of his 270 games in charge of Wolves, losing 100, and having made a promise of Premier League football within three seasons of his arrival the gruff former defender delivered just that. Having finished fifth in his first term at the club, leading to a painful play-off defeat to the Baggies, and then a 7th place finish in his second, McCarthy delivered the Championship title in his third season at the club.

There then followed, somewhat predictably, two tough relegation battles that the clubs fought through but the Molineux club clearly felt that the time was right to move on and it’s good to see McCarthy take it on the chin and being decent enough to talk to the press on his way out of the club.

No doubt McCarthy will soon find another position as his record in management, including spells at Millwall and Sunderland and as Ireland national coach, is still a very positive one.
