Sir Alex Ferguson may well feel he needs to spend this summer, having been knocked out early from Champions League action and seeing local rivals Man City mount a real genuine threat to their Premier League title, and a move for any of this talented midfield trio would be a wise use of Old Trafford resources.
Ferguson will have been impressed by the the performances of Benfica pair Javi Garcia and Nicolas Gaitan after his Man United side went toe to toe with the Portuguese giants in Champions League action this term, resulting in two hard fought draws.
23 year old Argentine playmaker Gaitan has been a big hit since his move to Lisbon from Boca Juniors 18 months ago and his form has helped propel the Eagles to the top of the pile in the Portuguese league. The pint sized adaptable midfielder, who can play in an advanced central role or out on the flanks, has amassed a healthy total of 10 goals and 19 assists for Benfica since his move to the club in May 2010 and no doubt his side will want far more than the £6m they forked out for his services.
Javi Garcia is a more measured performer, a defensive midfielder who can also distribute the ball well and perhaps the added steel that Man United may need given that they lack an out and out enforcer. The 25 year old failed to make the grade at Real Madrid but has battled back to make a name for himself and is an outside shot for a spot in Vicente del Bosque’s Spanish squad for the Euro 2012 finals, even though he is yet to secure a senior cap.
The jewel in this crown of trio Man United targets is however Sami Khedira. Sir Alex Ferguson may however struggle to persuade Jose Mourinho to sell the German international even though this term the former Stuttgart man has found himself sharing the defensive midfield role at the Bernabeu with a resurgent Lassana Diarra.
