Tottenham Hotspur have clinched the signing of Sao Paulo central defender Bruno Uvini, according to the Brazilian Serie A club.

Uvini, who is 20 years-old, was the captain of the Brazil side that won the FIFA Under 20 World Cup last summer, and has been earmarked for a bright future in the game.

The Sao Paulo stopper joins Spurs initially on loan, with a permanent signing in the works for the summer should all go to plan.

Either way, being in London will make for good preparation for Uvini, who hopes to be selected by Brazil in the Olympic squad for the 2012 competition.

“It’s a great opportunity that came by, I couldn’t let it pass,” Uvini is quoted as saying on Sao Paulo’s official website.

“I have been in talks with Tottenham for a while; it’s a great club, with worldwide visibility. They asked me to come straight away.

“I’ll be there for three months during which time I’ll try to adapt to English football and to the culture. I think I’m going to evolve, both professionally and personally by doing this choice.”

“They have a project to revamp the squad, and I want to spend this time with the team to hopefully be adjusted and ready for next season when I will join the team.”

Uvini has high hopes Tottenham Hotspur will again qualify for the UEFA Champions League, which given Spurs’ excellent season so far looks almost certain.

“It’s the dream of any footballer to play in [the Champions League].”

“In Sao Paulo team meetings we always watch the games – and play it in video games too!

I hope that this path is written to me.”

With Ledley King somewhat fragile, and Sebastien Bassong and Vedran Corluka out on loan, Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has been relying on Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson of late at the back – admittedly to great effect.

Ryan Nelsen was brought to White Hart Lane from Blackburn Rovers in the January transfer window, but the veteran New Zealand international is only a short term solution.

Perhaps Bruno Uvini will soon fill the unquestionable gap in the Spurs team.
