Etihad Stadium side ready to outbid Old Trafford rivals.
Manchester City are ready to make a £35million bid for Benfica star Nicolas Gaitan.
The Argentina international is also on Manchester United’s radar, but City are hoping to beat their local – and title – rivals to his signature by simply out-bidding them.
City officials are understood to have contacted their Benfica counterparts this week and made clear their desire to sign the attacking midfielder.
Gaitan has a release clause of around £35m written into his contract and City are said to be willing to meet that figure in order to get their man.

This sources is of the belief that Sir Alex Ferguson is unwilling to spend more than £30m on the talented 23 year old Argentine international and this appears to have left the door ajar for big spenders Man City. Roberto Mancini appears keen to further strengthen his squad and whilst it’s not immediately clear where he would have space for an advanced midfielder that doesn’t appear to be standing in the way of the Italian and another big money signing.
Given that the likes of Samir Nasri and Adam Johnson, top notch attacking options, fail to secure regular first team football, is there a need for Mancini to make a bid for Benfica’s Nicolas Gaitan?
The former Boca Juniors man can play either in a central role or out on the flanks and has been a big success since his move to Portugal 18 months ago and his ability to link midfield and attack, notching up a healthy total of goals and assists, has helped his Lisbon side to the top of the domestic table, some five points clear of FC Porto.
Mancini has so many midfield options at present that any summer additions would surely have to come at the expense of some departures. Currently the likes of David Silva, Gareth Barry, Yaya Toure and James Milner most frequently fill the central and wide areas with the aforementioned Nasri, Johnson and Nigel de Jong offering support which give the Premier League table toppers something of an embarrassment of riches to choose from.
This source believes that Man City have scoured Gaitan for some time and are hopeful of beating Man United to one of Ferguson’s long term targets, a possibility that would significantly increase if they were to clinch their first Premier League title success this term.
