Anfield side keen on Nou Camp squad player.
Liverpool are considering making a move for Barcelona attacker Ibrahim Afellay this summer and will monitor the Dutch international’s progress for the remainder of the season ahead of a possible bid if the 25 year old manages to successfully return from long term injury.
The former PSV Eindhoven man is set to return having been out of action for five months with a knee injury but had been a bench warmer prior to being sidelined and could therefore be considering his Nou Camp future.
Afellay spent eight seasons at PSV Eindhoven, helping his side to four Eredivisie title, and the Utrecht born flair player will not have been used to spending large spells out of the first team and whilst he may have expected to struggle to make his mark in the first team, the arrival of Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas in the summer coupled with the emergence of youngsters Pedro and Isaac Cuenca will further stifle his career at the Catalan club.
Kenny Dalglish may well feel he needs to add more creativity to his midfield and the fact that Afellay can play on the right side of the midfield will make the Barcelona man all the more a potential target as the Anfield boss looks to bring in a more natural fit to that side of his attack.
The likes of Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt have been used in this role but Afellay would be a more forward thinking weapon that Liverpool would be hoping to lure to Merseyside.
Liverpool’s director of football Damien Comolli successfully brought Barcelona youngster Giovani dos Santos to Tottenham during his spell at White Hart Lane and may well be the man to repeat the trick with Afellay this summer.
Given that Barcelona purchased Afellay for just £2.75m just over a year ago then it may not take a huge fee to persuade Pep Guardiola to sell a player who is likely to only play a fleeting role in Barcelona’s first team plans.
