England take on Holland at Wembley this evening as caretaker manager Stuart Pearce takes charge of the national side for the first time. The Under-21 boss takes over on a temporary basis following Fabio Capello’s resignation earlier this month and with bookmakers making the Three Lions a 2/1 chance, that price is sure to attract plenty of interest from patriotic punters.
Pearce has admitted that he would like to lead the side to Euro 2012 this summer, but Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is likely to be the No.1 choice for the FA. However, a positive result tonight would do Pearce’s chances no harm at all.
The caretaker boss has a rather depleted squad at his disposal though. He did name a more inexperienced squad to begin with, but since then he has had several players drop out including Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent and Kyle Walker.
This means some younger players – including strikers Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck – are going to have to step up and perform at Wembley. This is a tough test for England and Pearce will be after some positive individual performances, as well a victory in this international friendly.
As for Holland, they are bringing a very strong side to Wembley. They are one of the favourites for Euro 2012 too, so they are an excellent guide for England in terms of concluding which players are capable of raising their game against the best and at 13/8 look a very attractive bet.
Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie is doubtful though after he missed a training session this week. The Dutchman has been in fine form this season of course and England’s defence will perhaps breathe a sigh of relief if he doesn’t make it.
Holding midfielder Mark van Bommel is another doubt for Holland, although there are still plenty of capable players in the visitors’ ranks, including Wesley Sneijder who was heavily linked with Manchester United last summer.
With regards to England’s team, there are only a few options for Pearce in attack with Sturridge, Welbeck and Frazier Campbell the only fit forwards. With this in mind, he could opt to play Theo Walcott and Ashley Young either side of a lone striker.
Elsewhere, it is still to be announced who the captain with be for England, although Steven Gerrard is the favourite and he is likely to start the game alongside fellow candidate Scott Parker in central midfield.
England v Holland gets underway at 8pm this evening.
