Emirates Stadium side could pick up German international on the cheap.
Arsenal could sign Podolski for €10m due to contract clause – report
Should Stale Solbakken’s men be relegated from the Bundesliga, a stipulation in the striker’s deal which allows him to leave for a reduced fee will become active
The German has been widely linked with a move to north London, with reports circulating that the 26-year-old had already agreed personal terms with the Gunners.
The RheinEnergieStadion club had hoped to obtain a fee of around €20m for their star man, but should Stale Solbakken’s side be relegated from the top flight this season, Podolski could be allowed to leave for just €10m.
A cursory glance at the Bundesliga table suggests that this relegation clause may well become a factor. Koln finished last in tenth spot, some eight points from the relegation zone but Stale Solbakken’s RheinEnergieStadion side find themselves in a stickier situation this term.
Currently Koln sit in 14th place, just four points from the drop zone, and indeed just six off bottom of the table strugglers Freiburg. If you also factor in that Lukas Podolski’s side have lost six of their last seven matches it wouldn’t be a complete surprise if they did indeed suffer relegation this term.
Arsene Wenger is apparently very keen on landing the experienced 26 year old German international, who has almost a century of national team caps to his name, and if the Gunners boss can complete the deal on the cheap then clearly the North London side are more likely to get the job done.
The Arsenal boss is keen to boost his attacking option and Podolski’s good run of form this term, 15 goals in 18 matches, could lead Wenger to see the former Bayern Munich man as an ideal foil for Robin Van Persie. Alternatively he may see the Polish born attacker as wide option, especially as Andrei Arshavin, currently on loan at Zenit, may well leave the club in the summer.
