Sir Alex Ferguson hopes to bring midfield maestro to Old Trafford.
Manchester United are ready to fork out the fee necessary to lure Javi Martinez from Atletico Bilbao to Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson has had the box to box midfielder scouted for the best part of 18 months and is ready to make an offer for the Spanish international this summer.
Sir Alex Ferguson has had first hand experience of what Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez can do and the Man United boss sees the Spanish international as a perfect long term replacement for Paul Scholes in the centre of the park. The 23 year old has amassed over 200 appearances for his San Mames side and is heavily linked with a move away from the La Liga side this summer.
The 6ft 3in rangy midfielder has the physique that lends itself well to the Premier League and would surely be tempted by a move to Man United.
Whilst Athletic Bilbao have excelled in the Europa League they have struggled for form in La Liga and Marcelo Bielsa’s side sit in 11th spot in the table and this may well lead Martinez to believe he has progressed as far as he can at the club.
Though Man United have the upper hand in the Premier League title race Sir Alex Ferguson is not the type of manager to become complacent and having seen the sums spent by Man City and the manner in which Man United struggled in Europe this term, he is looking to bring in top level additions to his squad this summer.
Atletico Bilbao are apparently resigned to losing Martinez and have slapped a €34m (£28m) price tag on his services and Ferguson will reportedly receive the requisite funding to make just such an offer and will then have to hope that they beat other prospective suitors, said to include Real Madrid and Juventus, to his signature.
