AS Roma admitted they could sign Liverpool forward after his troubled season at Anfield, but only if they reach next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has been linked with a move abroad after a difficult second season on Merseyside.
Accusations of diving followed accusations of racist language towards Patrice Evra, and Suarez is now booed by opposition fans at many grounds across the country. with Serie A clubs Juventus and AS Roma the most likely summer destinations should he leave.
After a variety of reports published in both UK and Italian press this week stating that Suarez was set to move to Roma, the club have issued a statement – with a quite clear caveat.
“There is no negotiation going on for Suarez,” Roma Sporting Director Walter Sabatini told Italian radio station Mana Mana. “Even though he’s had a few problems recently, he’s a really strong player, but these are only transfer rumours.”
“We are satisfied with the attackers that we already have in the squad. We have other priorities,” Sabatini added. “Should we qualify for that competition then our market strategies would change.”
In summary, Roma are not currently in negotiations to sign Suarez from Liverpool. That is not to say that they are not interested.
Should they reach the UEFA Champions League, they may well submit a bid with the funds they receive.
