Emirates Stadium side ready to make defensive switch.
Per Mertesacker has kicked his last ball in anger for Arsenal, according to a report.
The German defender, a £10million deadline-day capture last summer, is out for the season with an ankle injury and will be sold on once the season ends, the piece claims.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen, who plays alongside the Gunners’ Thomas Vermaelen for Belgium.
The pair were also team-mates at the Amsterdam club before Vermaelen’s move to the Emirates.

Even though Per Mertesacker hasn’t covered himself with glory this term, putting in a number of shaky performances, it would still be a major surprise if Arsene Wenger looked to sell a player he only purchased in the summer. The 27 year old German international has clearly struggled to adapt to life in the English top tier and has looked well off the pace prior to being ruled out with an ankle injury.
Arsenal have been in great form since the former Werder Bremen man was ruled out with injury and Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen have been in fine form as a pairing over the past couple of months and that may well have left Mertesacker struggling to get back into the side even if he were fully fit.
Jan Vertonghen has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal and the fact that the Ajax man can also play as a defensive midfielder as well as centre back may well appeal to Wenger and if Mertesacker was sacrificed then a move for the 24 year old Belgian would appear to make a great deal of sense.
