San Siro side target hugely influential Gunners star who Arsene Wenger simply can not afford to lose this summer. Emirates stadium midfielder wanted by Italian giants.
Arsenal close in on M’Vila as Inter switch attention to Song
Inter Milan are battling Arsenal to sign France midfielder Yann M’Vila.
But the Serie A giants are ready to turn their attention to Alex Song if M’Vila opts to join the Gunners from Rennes.
Inter technical director Marco Branca has identified targets to strengthen several key areas after a tumultuous season at the San Siro.
M’Vila, 21, is their first choice to add bite to the midfield, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, but Inter fear that Arsenal are winning the race to sign the £20million-rated player.
Even if M’Vila arrives at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal are keen to hold on to Song and are expected to offer him a new long-term contract with a hefty pay rise on his £55,000 a week deal.
But that has not stopped Inter making him their second choice, after being knocked back for Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra.

Cameroon international Alex Song is arguably Arsenal’s second most important player after Robin Van Persie and interest from Inter Milan must concern Arsene Wenger, even though the San Siro side are in something of a slump at present. The 24 year old midfielder has excelled over the past two seasons and has this term become a more rounded player, capable of performing both in a defensively minded role but also able to put in more than his fair share of assists.
The former Bastia man is having the best season of his Gunners career, notching up 14 assists in all competitions as well as putting in his usual shift combating opposition advances and it’s no surprise that the Arsenal man has his prospective suitors and PSG are also said to be tracking the midfielder and Wenger would be wise to make an improved contract offer to Song to help dissuade any of Europe’s elite from putting in a bid for a player the North London club can not afford to lose.
Yann M’Vila is of course a talented individual, a player who Wenger has tracked for some time but Song is a player in his prime and the Arsenal boss has lost too many players who were just starting to flourish and will do all he can to avoid a repeat scenario.
Song has racked up over Arsenal 200 appearances since his £1m move from Bastia.
