The Magpies’ Cheick Tiote says that his number one ambition is to help his Newcastle side secure Champions League football for next season…Newcastle’s in-demand midfielder Cheick Tiote has insisted his future remains on Tyneside. The Ivory Coast international has been linked with a big-money move to Chelsea with a series of other potential suitors also monitoring his situation.
Since his £3.5million switch from FC Twente during the summer of 2010, the Ivory Coast midfielder has made a name for himself as one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League.
Tiote has played a pivotal role in Newcastle’s potential top-four finish, and while both the African Nations Cup and injury have at times disrupted is campaign, his partnership with France midfielder Yohan Cabaye has been priceless for the Toon army.
Solid performances over the past two seasons from the ex-Twente midfielder has led to speculation that he could be on his way to a bigger club during this summer’s transfer window.
However, the Newcastle star insists that he is happy on Tyneside as he attempts to help the club realise their improbable Champions League dream.
He told the Evening Chronicle: “I’m a Newcastle player – my future is at Newcastle.
“I’m playing for Newcastle and I have to finish this season strongly and help the team get into Europe.
“If we do that, it will be good for the club and the fans. We are in a great position now.”
Newcastle go into this weekend’s game against Stoke knowing that a victory for them and defeat for Arsenal against against Chelsea would see the Magpies sit just two points behind the London side with just three games left to play.
