There are few players in the game that give as much in the way of determination as the Man City defender and why he has failed to break into the England squad during much of Roberto Mancini’s reign as national team coach is a mystery.
The adaptable defender broke onto the scene in an explosive manner back in his first two seasons in the Etihad Stadium first team but it’s fair to say then that the 23 year old Birmingham born youngster went off the boil but he has returned to his best form over the past 18 months.
Jose Mourinho may feel he needs to bring in new options for his back four and the fact that the Man City man can play effectively at right back and in the centre of defence will tempt the Bernabeu boss.
Roberto Mancini will fight off any advances for such a crucial member of his squad and a lot could depend on whether Micah Richards is ready to leave the club he has represented since the age of 13 for a move to Spain.
