White Hart Lane star being considered for Estadio Santiago Bernabeu switch.Real Madrid may have practically confirmed their status as La Liga champions this season after beating arch rivals Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou, but they know the Catalans will strengthen in the summer.
So too then will Real Madrid.
It is thought that one of the Spanish capital side’s targets is Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric, because despite yesterday’s impressive victory over Barca, Jose Mourinho is conscious that his side don’t tend to control possession in the teams’ matches.
Real Madrid do dominate play in almost every other match they play, but Mourinho has come in for criticism for his record in El Clasico – until yesterday only beating Barcelona once in his time there, and never convincingly.
Whilst players such as Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira have given tremendous service, they have looked tired in recent weeks. Esteban Granero has proven a capable backup, but Turkey internationals Nuri Sahin and Hamit Altintop have hardly featured, and perhaps an alternate option is needed to be able to step in immediately.
Luka Modric has been excellent for Spurs this campaign, particularly in the first half of the season, despite angling for a move for Chelsea at the start of the campaign.
Whilst his recent performances have tailed off at the same time as Tottenham’s, at his best he dictates matches with metronomic passing and a not too infrequent goal threat.
Real Madrid look to have conquered a team many consider to be the greatest of all time this season, and that achievement should be lauded.
However as the saying goes, it is much more difficult to stay at the top than get there.
Adding Modric to the midfield would help.
