Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic has recently admitted that he was unaware that a booking in the semi-final win over Barcelona would keep him out of the final in May.
The Stamford Bridge side produced an epic display against the Spanish giants on Tuesday night, with Ivanovic emitomising their intensity and dedication as he pulled out one of his best performances in a Chelsea shirt.
Following John Terry’s sending off just before half-time, Barcelona cruised to a 2-0 lead and it looked as if the Catalan side were going to run riot for the remainder of the night. Chelsea, however, gave the footballing world a lesson in defensive tactics by keeping Barca at bay with just 10 men for the remainder of the tie.
The Serbia international was booked early in the second half for dissent following Dider Drogba’s poorly timed tackle which saw Barcelona awarded a penalty kick. And in a post-match interview on Sky Sports that went viral just moments later, the interviewer painfully reminded the defender three times that he would miss the final.
But Ivanovic has admitted that he was not aware of the situation during the match.
“I didn’t expect him (the referee) to book me for that and I didn’t know I was in the danger zone,” Ivanovic told Sky Sports.
“The Champions League and football is like life. You cannot look back. You have to look forward. [But] I feel happy because the team goes to the final. We deserved it at the end of the day, with some luck. With a little bit of luck, we produced some great defending.
“I think we have great players and a good squad. That’s why we are in the final and we have to play like a group, and we have to believe. Not a lot of guys believe in us, but we believe.”
