The return to professional football of Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has been one of the most romantic stories of the Premier League era.
Following the retirement of Scholes last summer, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson found it neon impossible to fill the void left by the England international. And since the dramatic turn of events, which saw Scholes feature against Manchester City in his first game back, United have dropped just four points in 13 league games.
With the Red Devils preparing for arguably their biggest ever game against rivals city, Manchester United fans will know that their midfield maestro has to be on top form if they’re to keep the likes of Tevez and co at bay.
Last time Scholes lined up away at City was in the 09/10 season where he scored an injury time winner and secured three crucial points for his side in their quest for the Premier League title.
England defender and fellow United teammate, Rio Ferdinand, is hoping the 37-year-old keeps going next season but knows the decision will ultimately come down to his colleague alone.
When recently questioned by Sky Sports on whether he thought his United teammate could continue playing for another season, the centre-back said: “Definitely. It would be nice if he could play another season.
“With Scholesy, though, you know it doesn’t make a difference what anybody else says. He’s his own man and he’ll make his own decision.”
If United manage to beat City away on Monday, it would be another step in the right direction for Scholes if he’s to lift his 11th league title with the Red Devils, and Ferdinand knows the midfielder has played a key role since the turn of the year.
He added: “He was out of the game for months and yet he’s come straight back into top-level football and he’s hardly looked out of place. At this stage of his career, that’s phenomenal.
“It’s not just the quality of his football that impresses me but the way he’s adapted physically.
“Would we have been in the same position without him? It’s impossible to say. It’s great to have him back, though.
“There are a number of reasons why we’ve done well since the turn of the year and there’s no doubt that one of them is Paul Scholes.”
