Sir Alex Ferguson plans Bernabeu swoop.
Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly readying a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira. The Man United boss has earmarked a move for the German international who he hopes will add some much needed steel to the centre of his Old Trafford side. It could be tough to persuade 25 year old Khedira to leave the Bernabeu given that he is set to clinch a La Liga title but the Scot will look to lure the powerful battler to the Premier League.
Ferguson lacks an out and out defensively minded midfield option and though Phil Jones has been very effective when called upon to fill this role a move for Khedira would help add a more natural balance to the club’s first team. The former Stuttgart man had a fairly decent first season in Spain but has struggled for consistency this term as he has found himself sharing first team duties with Frenchman Lassana Diarra.
The likes of Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley do not offer all that much in terms of beef in the Man United midfield and Ferguson feels his side needs a strong tackler to help halt the advances of opposition attacks.
Jose Mourinho has handed Khedira 31 starts out of the club’s 55 matches across all competitions this term and some sources had reported that the two had enjoyed a fairly frosty relationship, leading to speculation that interest in the Real Madrid midfielder could lead to a departure.
Sir Alex Ferguson has missed the presence of a true defensive midfielder ever since Owen Hargreaves’ injury problems blighted his career at the club and appears to see Khedira is the ideal man to fill the void.
