Manchester United have identified Bayern Munich’s teenage defender David Alaba as a potential addition to a squad that ended the season without a major trophy for the first time in seven years.
A quick and technically able footballer capable of playing all across the midfield as well as both full back positions, Alaba has established himself as Bayern’s first-choice on the left side of defence during the German club’s run to the Champions League final.
Alaba, who turns 20 next month, is both the youngest man to play a competitive match for Bayern and a full international for Austria.
Although he has been in Munich since joining from Austria Vienna in 2008, an opportunity to hold down a starting berth at Bayern only presented itself in February because of enforced absences in defence.

Having brought in young defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in recent seasons and with Jonny Evans showing huge improvement over the past campaign, it would appear that Sir Alex Ferguson has a strong defensive line-up to call upon for the long term. However there may be a need to bring in a player who can ably take the reins from Patrice Evra at left back and it may be in this role that Sir Alex Ferguson has in mind for this prospective purchase.
Vienna born Alaba has played a significant part in Jupp Heynckes first team this term, making 45 appearances in all competitions, and has played at left back as well as in the centre of the midfield. The determined teenager has a good engine and as well as having bite in the tackle is a good sensible distributor of the ball and a player with a great deal of potential.
The youngster will miss tonight’s Champions League final having picked up a second booking at the Bernabeu and is contracted until 2015 so any move for the Austrian international would prove fairly tricky, not least as the Bavarian side is not likely to be open to offers for the 19 year old.
